Raclette and High WInds

Enjoying some raclette slices and a cup of coffee. Just a few days ago it was 20 degrees with 8 inches of old snow still clinging to the ground. Yesterday, the temps went crazy. 60 and climbing. No coats. Just a sleeveless blouse and open-toe sandles with red nail polish.
Last night the moon was shockingly bright, like a car headlight. The winds started coming in, bring with it cold front. Here it is now -- threatening to drop tree limbs off their trunks onto electric wires and put out my wifi signal. The wind is gusting to 50 mph this morning. I better type faster.

figuring our fleas

Well! This summer has been the Battle of the Fleas! I did not expect to develop so many flea fighting skills. After researching online, calling vets & Frontline Help and asking for advice from friends I have developed a strategy.

The strategy goes like this. First buy Frontline ($40) and foggers ($20). Next, trap the cats and stuff them into cat carriers. While the cats are frightened out of their minds in the carriers watching you, go room by room and lay out newspapers in the middle of the rooms. Place a fogger in the center. Go back and tell the kitties that they only need to wait a few more minutes.

Now DASH from room to room and set off the foggers. It is very nerve-wracking because you might accidentally shoot yourself in the face or get it all over your fingers (I did the latter and had to take extra time washing it off.) While you run around, keep your mouth shut, your nose covered and try to maintain deliberate calm.

Grab the cat carriers once the last fogger is erupting and pop the cats in the car. They will be making sounds like you have never heard before – like little dogs. Howling.

Turn on the car. Drive for two hours if it is winter. OR if it is summer, realize you can sit it out on the porch. The cats enjoy watching the birds.

After two hours, open the windows in the house and wait 30 more minutes to enter. Put the Frontline on your cats. They will also appreciate treats now.

SO you are not done yet. The work has just begun. You have to spend the next day washing the sheets, covers and vacuuming everything. You need to wash off all surfaces where the fogger might ruin your stuff.

HERE'S THE BAD PART, you get to vacuum every day for WEEKS. The flea life cycle is the problem. You need to keep track of the eggs, larvae, whatever for what feels like eternity. If people in your house are allergic to fleas, you get to hear them complain about blisters that multiply on both legs from ankle to knee. You might even get a mouthful of deet when you walk up the stairs when someone is spraying themselves before coming down. Nice.

The cats will continue to scratch. Poor things. Resist temptation to give them flea collars and flea baths because you will make the cats sick. The Frontline is supposed to work for 30 days. The cats act like little flea traps. The new hatching fleas are supposed to jump on the cats and die. That is the way it is supposed to work.

I think we are losing the flea battle. I just found a flea on my arm...

Decorating World Headquarters

The office is getting attention. The taupe paint is on the walls and white paint on the trim thanks to Spencer and new closet doors are installed waiting for red paint.

The new taupe window honeycomb coverings are hung, replacing the tattered orange roll-ups. Yoshi is going to miss her old window sill view of the world but cat fur doesn't belong on new shades. Foster and Yoshi, the two cats, will find new ways to explore the house.

The file cabinets are sporting a dark bronze coat of metallic paint and matching like a store-bought set. A little touch up on a few spots and we can fill them with papers again.

There is a new natural light coming in the ceiling panels and top hats where there used to be fluorescent light. Trimming one panel will be easy to do. Adding a few table lights will spotlight certain areas. A new entryway table and mirror will greet us each night.

Soon the recycled furniture will be in the new layout, the computers returned and the mid-century chairs and tables will take the center. The best of the 1950's inspired the update and world headquarters will be brought into the twenty-first century.

Reading and Taking Notes

I gave up a day of sailing to come home and read and take notes for my new class, Philanthropy in Urban Communities. It has not been easy. There were some chores, some pets to play with, my son to talk to and a new computer that needed attention that distracted me from my goal. I have the assignments on my calendar now and have been reading for an hour but it is time to look for something sweet to eat and cool to drink. Being a student isn't easy but I love the conflict for the greater good.

Touchstone in Chagrin Falls

Walked in a huge meadow today. A gravel path meandered through waves of rudebekia, queen anne's lace, grasses, clover. The queen anne's heads so airy -- like paint splashes across the waves of green. Everywhere were butterflies of yellow and orange, white and black. The sunshine soaked us. Crunching the pebbles on the path with every step, we talked casually about our lives. Catching up. We miss so much day to day and appreciate having one day like today to be ourselves. To live together and just take a walk in a meadow.

Getting back in the game

Getting back in the game. What does that mean? Does it mean getting back to a blog that was started and ignored? Does it mean getting back to school? Does it mean getting back to the gym and "pumping iron"? Is it getting back to painting watercolors?

Getting back in the game -- it's all a game. The game is attitude and activities. It is blogs, and books, and workouts and painting. It is all of it. It is time to do all of it again. It is time to breathe and laugh and believe life is today. Do whatever. Smile. Laugh. Be.

The Universe Is Abundant

"The universe is abundant" is an expression that I first hear years ago. I was on a train to Washington, D.C., with a new friend who excitedly told me how her committment to this thought changed her life. We spent the day exploring the capitol and I witnessed this concept of abundance. One laugh brought more laughter. One raindrop brought more rain. She believed her thoughts of abundance brought her to affluence, literally. It was fun to imagine that a thought could be rewarded with abundance. I spent the day thinking about it but then I went home, back to my busy life, and tucked that thought away.

Lately, I am hearing that expression again - frequently. While the news is often grim with war and crime, the message that the universe is abundant has returned to me. Time to listen again and share it with others. One thought brings more thoughts. One raindrop brings more rain. One laugh brings more laughter.
